The FIA, FMU, and FBR (I&I-IR) jointly organized a two-day workshop in Islamabad on August 20-21, 2024, focused on financial intelligence related to Hawala. The event, led by the FIA and organized by UPSCALE and FCDO, aimed to enhance the skills of investigation officers and analysts in understanding the legislative and procedural frameworks related to this issue.

During the workshop, Director General of the AML/CFT Authority, Dr. Ehsan Sadiq, Director General of FMU, Ms. Lubna Farooq Malik, and Director (AML) of FIA, Mr. Humayun Masood Sandhu, addressed the participants, underscoring the critical importance of combating Hawala due to its economic implications and connections to other criminal activities.

The workshop sessions covered various topics, including identifying suspicious activities and developing financial intelligence on Hawala/Hundi, understanding banking documents for investigative purposes, an overview of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, the use of Hawala for terrorism financing, the applicability of the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Act of 2010, and understanding international cooperation.
